The 30% Rebate

The 30% rebate on private health insurance premiums is available to all Australians who are members of a registered health fund and are eligible for Medicare benefits.

The 30% rebate applies to the whole premium, that is both the Hospital and Ancillary premium components.

All eligible Australians can claim the 30% rebate regardless of their level of income or membership type (single, couple, family or single parent family). You can even claim the rebate if you have paid a health insurance premium but are not actually covered by the policy.

There are three ways you can receive the rebate:

    • pay a reduced premium to your health fund.
    • claim the rebate when lodging your annual tax return (even if not paying tax).
    • claim a direct rebate payment from a Medicare office.
