Shoppers get bargains from their credit cards

Many credit cards in 2010 introduced or enhanced their discounts and free offers to their cardholders – but many cardholders still don’t know about these great deals. About half of all Australian credit cards offer some kind of free extended warranty for major purchases, on top of the manufacturer’s warranty. Thirty-five cards now on the market offer “a lowest price guarantee’.

If you provide the details to your credit card issuer within 21 days of the purchase, they will refund the difference! Credit cards, unlike mortgages, have no exit fees and switching from one to another is as easy as filling out a form, providing some financial details and you will probably get a great balance transfer rate. Of the cheap annual fee, low rate cards, Bankwest’s Lite MasterCard looks good value with its RewardMe program which has discounted movie tickets, accommodation, dining, and discount stock from barbecues to golf sets.

The Aussie MasterCard has a MasterCard applause program for access to sporting and entertainment events, as well as eDine discounts to restaurants, hotels and car hire, and the Aussie Wine Club by Cellarmasters. There are at least seven credit cards that offer you accidental breakage insurance for free – but they have average annual fees of about $170.
